Abstract

The article provides a brief overview of the history of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States, including the range of products currently offered. It also highlights the fundamental differences between traditional open/closed-end funds and ETFs, and offers insight into the potential future of ETF products. Finally, with potential fund sponsors as the intended audience, the article provides guidance on how to evaluate if ETFs are right for their business, and if so, the importance of selecting partners with the requisite expertise to ensure the success of their product(s).
